And that rhyming name pleases me waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than any twenty-something man has any right to be. Thinking about making him my official mascot from now on. Thoughts?

Halloween: Greatest Day Ever?

Image
Or, if you want a pretentious and artsy title: "Breaking Out Of The Prison Of Normality." I live in New York, so, y'know, feel free to picture this. If it helps.  So, Halloween is the best Holiday ever, right? Right! ALL DISSENTERS REPORT TO THE GAS OVENS! Halloween is great for a number of reasons, most of which I don't have to tell you. One of them, though, doesn't get mentioned often enough, and I thought I'd pass it along here should anyone come across it. Tell me: if you pass by a guy on the street, exactly how much thought do you give him? If he's not doing anything particularly weird or dressed unusually you probably just walk by, right? Right. But what about Halloween? You walk by somebody dressed as a character you recognize, what do you do? This. You do this. I saw, this Halloween, a pair of parents with three kids - Mom was Alex Delarge, Dad was Jason. The kids were Mike Myers, Freddy Krueger and the baby had a Hannibal L...

Wasn't able to come up with an alternative for this one. But, y'know, I like this one the best so far.

To Slay A Dinosaur: Part III

J A   C K scaled the rest of the miniature plateau, falling twice and hitting the same outcropping he’d hid from the ‘triceratops’ on, and when he made it to the top he found a small cave. About twenty feet wide, and twelve feet high at its tallest. Angular, some rocks about half his height off the ground. One wide enough for him to sleep on. He got some of the tall, straight plants – hard-barked, black, some nine feet tall near the river but the ones near the cave no taller than him – and built a fire. He cut his hand, and it was exhausting, and he only had success after the sun had already gone down. But now, at least, he could keep away the bugs. He’d only had to kill one – a two-foot centipede. The others were all small enough for him not to notice, or scared away. There was a puddle in the corner of the cave. Six feet around and three deep. He submerged himself in it, the closest to a bath he’d get here. He’d drank some scummy, opaque water from it. It tasted li...

To Slay A Dinosaur: Part I

B L A C K    skies stretched as far as he could see. There was no horizon. There were no stars. He could look around only as far as ten feet in front of him, while he kept running. White trees like pillars seemed to hold up the blanket of moist darkness around him. Trees that spread out long, straight branches of spiky, dripping leaves. Treeswith bark dented, broken and scratched from a thousand conflicts long ended. Testimony to a thousand lives the trees had survived, to a time long forgotten. Perhaps one that should not be. He tried to walk, and the soil cracked and creaked like paper. The ferns beneath him were long and sinister, like the claws of darkness. They seeped in and out of the night as he ran as though they were trying to flee from him. Long, thick creepers and vines stretched between the awful trees and out of the water that flowed through the cracks in the Earth beneath him. Sounds like long, high-pitched echoes – almost like Whale Calls – mourn...

On the Subject of Crossovers....

So, crossovers. It seems to be the order of the day with Hollywood recently, what with The Avengers and the upcoming Batman vs. Superman movie, and old Franchises seem to be getting revived left and right. The New Star Trek was pretty good attempt at breathing new life into a property that (you'd think) had been beaten to death up until then (and then was promptly beaten to death, but with lens flares). Apparently Star Wars will be seeing some of that in the next two years or so (though I remain skeptical that it'll be anything worth seeing, but I'll have to wait and see).  Even though Disney made John Carter , which was in my opinion the best Space Opera ever filmed (Yes, better than any of the six Star Wars films. No, don't worry, I have the pitchforks and torches here at my house, just swing by whenever you feel like it's angry mobbin' time), I can't see them doing SW right. The original films had a dark edge to them, and the effects of the time a...
